did the memory foam mattress topper route also (maybe 1.5 -2" thick)
on top berth on wife's insistence. Personally, I found the upper
berth ok after the first few nights :) despite a history of 2
herniated disks, (and being sort of heavy 195#, 6-2. But I like a
firm bed, its my monk like living habits, ha!)

What was really comfy for me was a mattress cover made from fleece.
the memory foam is noticeably warmer (and the fleece adds to that),
which can be a good or bad thing depending on weather.

the foam topper would be folded up and would fit in the rear 1/3 of
upper berth when top down.
