You can only do it one way. The flywheel doesn't fit through the adapter plate. Ergo, you must remove the transmission from the adapter plate. The plate stays on the engine until the flywheel comes off.

the adapter is bolted firmly to the engine. then trans is installed onto that. you'll be removing trans from 'engine with adapter.'

or you can remove 'engine with adapter' from the trans.
