Neil,

I struggled with same issue of loose fitment of socket in dash :)

I used o-ring where you used copper wire. still, was not enough to
keep the iPod stalk in place. aftermarket socket so much better for
this.

My first dash removal adventure had me puzzling over the cig lighter
assembly. Ironic considering I actually got the dash off w/o too much
ado.

The assembly was loose in the dash. I don't recall exactly where
slackc was, but I wound a length of #14 solid bare copper wire around
it where assembly meets dash face. This *just* took up the slack.
