Funny you mention that. The engine and the harness are set up for the Syncro thermostat (single pin electrical contact and the lower metal housing) but I just got off the phone with the PO and he confirmed it is in fact from an 87 GL. I used the cross bar from the donor motor but I guess I'll swap out the parts with my engine and try different combinations till it looks like a better fit. Maybe the guys in Hanover had too much hops at the Biergarten that day and picked from the wrong parts bin. REALLY inconvenient since I have to keep dropping the motor up and down and undoing the mounts isn't the most fun. Thanks for the info and if anyone has any other tips, keep'em coming. This (engine swap) may not end today and at this rate, I doubt I'll get to turn the key before work today.
