It's been mentioned here before (including rather recently) but your problem is a good reminder that there is a simple diagnostic tool for non-start issues:

I made one as soon as I saw that post... I think it would have let you quickly isolate the problem you eventually found.

It's been said that mechanical problems take minutes to find and hours to fix whereas electrical problems take hours to find and minutes to fix.
