Very interesting idea.

My first thought is a tatami. Since they're rigid, if you could order two thin ones (perhaps 4'x4'x1/2") to fit your Vanagon's floor and if you're not too tall, you could store them upside down (with a durable bottom to tread on when stowed) on the floor, when not in use outside?

Perhaps I'll use the same for creating more sleeping space in my van with a shoji at at each end for privacy!
