Scott: yes, conveniently, it seems the damaged area is only a little shorter than the required cut-off for a VW I4 swap.

Mark: for sure. I recall that tip you provided. Did that on my swap. Worked like a hot darn. No helper, so worked my way around bit by bit, cut it slightly long and filed remainder. Worked out pretty good:

If cross shaft bushings ok, and no cracks on arms, that clutch housing should be good to go. Like you said. Time/money saved.
