-- the owner's manual with my '91 Volkswagen Vanagon GL Campmobile (Westy to most of you) with original waterboxer 2.1 engine says to avoid alcoholic fuel if possible. Here in Oklahoma we generally have a choice, with non-alcoholic gasoline running about 8 -10 cents more per gallon than alcoholic for regular grade (87 octane hereabouts). When traveling I've found there is often no choice. I get a little poorer fuel mileage, but I can't tell that it's hurt the vehicle.
