I would say ecu's can work but not work right. I seldom find a bad one though.

if it's idling extra fast, I'd unplug the air idle valve on top of the engine, as a test. I have seen extreme high idle 'just occur' from that system ...the electronic idle speed control, involving that valve and the control unit for it behind the right tail light.

At least check there for corrosion - where that control unit plugs in, behind the right tail light.

as a 'general rule' ....one place to start is a very careful 'visual inspection' ... of everything you can see - everything that might be cracked, loose, corroded, stuck, rusty, falling off , frayed ... etc etc. I doubt old gasoline is causing your problem, but do consider that the fuel itself might be old or even contaminated, like with water possibly.

also air leaks....really need to check everywhere for any air leaks. The large air boot lasts quite well on 2.1's ...but check that .
