There's always Bruno over at German Car Service at Olympic and Cloverfield,
which I've heard mostly positive reviews.

Probably not cheap though. Then there's Swiss Motors on Sepulveda, and
they're DEFINITELY not cheap, as they specialize mostly in Porsche. They do
have a cool yellow air-cooled Vanagon with a Porsche engine in it parked out
front.

A few years ago I would have recommended "Jack", a guy who worked out of his
driveway in Venice. He rebuilt several Vanagons for my friends... but
unfortunately Jack made the mistake of trusting a hydraulic jack a couple
years ago and got crushed to death. under the front end of a Vanagon. NEVER
TRUST A JACK!
