That tank is an ASME design tank. Does not require regular inspection/testing like a DOT tank. If it does not leak you are OK for now. As this van with low mileage probably sat unused for a long time, you will need to run it and test things and be prepared for a number of repairs that will be needed as the van gets pressed into service. Spend money wisely.

The streaks on the fuel tank are signs of fuel leakage either from the vent tubes or a hole on the upper side of the tank. Both common. Have you fully filled it checked for leaks yet. If not have the vapor recovery system pressure tested before filling to avoid a mess.

I have an 85 Westy that I'm buying. Pictures of the propane tank are at the bottom here:

http://autohaus-lancaster.ebizautos.com/shared/photos-1985-volkswagen-vanago n-5340152.html?src=eBizAutos&pid=26

I'm wondering if I should order the new tank with new regulator, etc. or buy the components such as from here: http://community-2.webtv.net/VanStuff/VanagonWestfalia/

The local propane company won't re-certify a tank this small.

I'm wondering what people are doing? Just buy the new tank assembly for about $310 new or doing all the parts and leaving it at that?
