A quick look at the German version of the Bentley shows nothing in relay spot #4. Just for laffs, I looked at Bentley for golf/jetta '85-92. Looking at the models that share fuse panel with vanagon, likely candidate is upshift indicator relay :)

vanagons didn't have that of course.

so maybe you have a relay stuck in there for fun, or someone rewired back connections and it does something wonderful, ,or you miscounted :)

Tach pulses sound about right - does that spot get a relay if I add a tach to the dash?
