Don't forget the approach of putting tweeters behind stock speaker grill at top of door and midrange elements at foot of door. Previous owner did that on my '86 syncro, Boston acoustic speakers, crossover boxes on each side tucked into air channel just forward of door in frame.

The problem is the thickness not the diameter -- I recently put new 4 inch speakers in my front doors. I have an 84 Westy -- had to take speaker grills from an 85 and up to allow a little more thickness --- and then grind the window winders so they would clear the new grills. The 84 speaker grills are flush with the door and the 85 and up ones protrude about 1/8". I see you have a 91 GL so you may have power windows --- so depending on where all the wiring and switches are you have more room --- still the thickness that is the problem.
