Our $119 Ezy- Awning can be converted to a freestanding shelter if you add a pair of extra legs for $19.95. So you can attach it to the Vanagon (or an SUV, etc.) when desired, and use it standalone at other times (i.e. if you leave your campsite for the day).

An awning or EZ-up will act like a sail in gusty winds. I've seen moderately severe thunderstorms turn even $600 awnings into twisted wreckages, and/or send bits of them flying into neighboring campsites and vehicles. It's best to lower it if things look nasty. Our Ezy-Awning can be lowered on one end (or both) to cover belongings temporarily during a storm without letting wind lift it up.
