Bryan,

Many have already contribute much as to what could be causing your pump to
buzz. Here is how mine evolved.

MY pump buzzed so badly that at some point it just quit working, but not
because the pump was the issue, but because it was restricted of fuel.

Like Scott mentioned, running the pump of a gas can is not at all illogical,
It can rule out crud in the tank. That is what made mine not work correcly
and buzz like a bag of bumble bees at happy hour in a beer garden.

The crud was so bad that it mimiced the "syndorme" Iddle fine, put load on
it. In this case vaccum of the pump sucking gas and crud and it would cut
off.

The fix for me: Blew air (or rather the mechanic did after I gave up) in the
tank until bubbles were heard. Put everything back together. No buzz, van
running!!! Win!

However, I know that there is crud in that tank and that at some point it
will have to be dropped and replaced.
