Some people may want to take advantage of the feature that allows the batteries to combine even when the engine is not running, such as to boost starting with the aux battery. That feature is of questionable value for a Vanagon IMHO, and not required to be connected. No problem doing it but best to increase the wire size if implemented. Increasing the wire size makes for other problems so I say don't implement the feature and keep things simple.
