I did this recently with a deep socket from Advanced Auto and a breaker bar. Worked a treat. Seems to me I had the water pump pulley off at the time because I was replacing also the cooling pipe that goes forward to the thermostat; don't remember if that made any difference to getting the sender out -- possibly better visibility.
