I bought my first bus from a friend who broke the engine in by revving
it up in every gear.  (His dad was a VW aficionado and owned countless
60s era VWs)  The engine just loved to be taken to its redline with
every shift.  It was how it was born.  Granted it only lasted 80K miles
though...
