I had one here that stuck in the middle... opened slowly but would not open all the way.

The one that came (to me, VW part) in my '89 would start to open at the correct temp, would be fully open at the correct temp, but was much too closed at the intermediate spec. Made the engine run noticeably cool, needle well below the LED.
