I bought one of those white boxy looking roof top cargo boxes for a trip down to California for a wedding and camping. http://i197.photobucket.com/albums/aa190/becida/Vanagon%20cargo/jedswedding031.jpg .

There were 6 of us, the youngest was 15. I put all the bulky light weight stuff in the box, sleeping bags, blankets and couple of tents and bagged camp chairs, those things that really take the space inside the Vanagon. I had zero problems with the box on top, it was a great thing to have, even better than a cargo trailer for that type of trip. I still have it.
