  Here in the Columbia Gorge in the NW US, the most prevelant roof cargo
system seems to be from Yakima (brand, not the city) ...usually one or two
of those streamlined plastic roof boxes and the various sporting items
mounted between or beside those "pods".  I've had a Yakima rack through
about 4 vehicles and it has been very satisfactory, except for the premium
price of pieces/parts.  I have not used one of those cargo pods, though.
Not many vehicles have rain gutters any more so make sure whatever you buy
will be adaptable to 'towers' (that is what Yakima calls the uprights that
accept the cross bars) that will attach to the gutters.  Getting stuff into
a roof pod on a vanagon must be difficult.
