I may have sent this link before, but for those interested in what's happening in northern Mexico this book is very insightful.

The writer of this book tells it well. Perceptive and accurate, his account of the wild men and macho drug-cowboys..

I've been a traveler in Mexico since my grade school days. There have always been Bandits. Way back in the 60s when my parents took us kids overland to Acapulco, we were repeatedly warned of highway robbers on the stretches between Nogales/Juarez and Mazatlan. Told to 'Never stop for anyone in remote areas'. Now a days, they just have assualt rifles and the press has 'caught' hold of the "Drug-Wars" theme. The danger of traveling down there probably HAS increased. Assualt rifles can shoot lots of bullets and plenty of the Narco-banditos are using their own product. A buncha drunk, strung-out, coked-up guys with AR-15s ? Not good!

Would we solve Mexico's lawlessness by legalizing most drugs in the US? Probably not.
