Sure looks close, as in 'almost touching.'

I think the real problem ...the real issue - don't blame you for resisting facing it is :

Engine needs to be mounted just a little more aftward. I wonder if there's an easy way to do that ... like just move a couple engine mounting bar bolt holes.

to me 'the normal way' ....... like if you had started out with an air-cooled vanagon body, and decided to mount a waterboxer trans in it, then ABA engine at 15 degrees is - First you mount the trans andlinkage all up per stock arrangment. Then you bolt the engine and adatper to the trans, then you make the engine mounting system, then connect/install all the hoses, wires, exhuast etc.

It's terrible to 'go backwards' of course in projects like this. If you can pull off this front trans mount thing so there's no issues, great,

but .....I suspect, the 'real right way' would be to get or make proper 'short' ( fore-aft speaking ) wbxr front trans mounting bracket - this would be a modified wbxr front trans bracket - to keep the altitute of the waterboxer trans nose, but the fore-aft shortenss of a diesel vanaonagon front trans bracket . The frint rubber mount can go on in the normal fashion, not turned around.

Get that in, then 'fix' the shift linkage length to match. Then get engine mounting sorted out for it's new slightly more aftward location.

lot of work I know, but unless you can 'get this one last issue' .....contact with the body/frame thing handled ( IF that is what's happening ) ....it what might be what's needed to ulitmately get it really right.
