The irony was not lost on me at the time.

It was one of my better fixes, though, maybe the best of my life and I've had some doozies. Something I had read in popular mechanics. Find a D cell (there was one in my radio in the trunk) and jumper cables and use the carbon rod from the battery (cut away the paper covering in those days) hooked to the car's battery. Hook jumper cable to the carbon rod and positive, the other side to ground. The carbon rod would get red hot when it touched metal, and I welded/soldered the broken plate and torn wires. Timed it by ear under the barn light at a ranger's house and put about another hundred miles on it like that.
