If your cooling system is not working properly the lower temp thermostat
will only delay the inevitable. Not only should you use the 87 but make sure
it does NOT have the bleed or bypass hole and it should have a rubber seal
on the top valve plate. This is particularly important for winter operation
as the radiator has so much thermal capacity any leakage at the t-stat will
delay or prevent proper warm up. After another recent bad experience with
aftermarket I get them again at the dealer.

I see that there's lower temp thermostats avaialble for the Westy.
What's the use of a lower temp thermostat?  Stock is 87 and these are 80
 IIRC.
