In the RV world generators that run on the same fuel as the vehicle are plumbed to the tank in such fashion that ~1/4 tank will remain and the generator will run out of fuel. An auxiliary heater should be plumbed the same way.

Gasoline powered would mean you could run your gas tank empty and be unable to travel. Then you'd have to carry spare gasoline in the rig somewhere. I think I prefer propane for this application but I'll give it more thought.
