Welcome to the list! You're in good hands :) Well, if you can cut through the crazy :)

The earlier Vanagons had a pre-pump filter instead of the post pump canister type filter. I can only assume your Vanagon is '86 or newer.

I've had some tank crud/filter issues recently and received many responses from list members who have installed the pre '86 style pre-pump filter - and also kept their post pump filter as well.

The stock pre-pump filters have a smaller diameter inlet that the outlet - so there may be some changing of hose size and adapting to do. (sorry I don't know the sizes off hand).
