I had a bad head gasket a few years ago --- or so my buddy (a 25 year VW
mechanic with a dealer) was convinced. He begged me to take it to his
favourite rad shop and have them put a sniffer on it to confirm. I did so
--- the dude in the rad shop used a sniffer all right. He opened the cap to
the expansion tank and put his nose to it. He said "yep give her a sniff" I
did and, sure enough, could smell exhaust in the coolant. Pretty
sophisticated equipment :-) Worth a sniff anyway :-)
