You're getting unmeasured or "false "air through the break which will run the engine rich, or not at all if the air leak is large,But it is not the cause of overheating. That you mentioned your thermostat is "unknown", I would look there now, as a stuck thermostat will cause a boil over. Robert 1982 Westfalia  Golf powered and back on the road today

  OK first thing I found this morning is my dipstick 'sleeve' is fractured. I recall that when I was doing some other thing once and tried to run without the dipstick in place the EFI was not working properly at all...High idle, behavior...Do we possibly look here for an overheating condition due to improper inputs to the 'brain' from a vacuum leak or something?  Grasping at straws...   Don Hanson
