Me again, answering my own questions... :-)

I took the other side apart, and found a collar which looks much closer to the Van-Cafe picture, very little rust. The knurled end is meant to keep the collar seated in the rubber lower bushing. I also found the rubber lower bushing has a steel plate inside it, which effectively holds the top of the shock tightly centred in the upper mount. So I am less concerned about this little part now, and have just cleaned them up and coated with POR-15 for re-install.

Maybe this somewhat obscure, obsessive little thread will help someone someday... ;-)
