If somebody wanted to do it they could use the FET's you find on old computer motherboards, they are usually 30V 40-60A... And that is one interesting reason to do it 30 to 40 amps more or less from the batteries at a time is almost all of the capacity, of the alternator etc. So it would be more reasonable to use only as much as required 40-100 % instead of just on/off... However who has time to pioneer that type of circuit?

Better to still be one of the first to convert a Vanagon to electric drive :)
