never knew that.. my '84 wolfsburg had intermittant wipers... had the #19 relay.. i pulled it and replaced it w/ the #99 and everything works fine.. what number is on the non- intermittant wiper relay?

Here's a fuzzy pic of the old relay & the plastic piece pulled from the wiper switch-you can only see the end of the piece (left side) until you pull it out.

Chris, take a look in Bentley -- vans that didn't have any intermittent wiping facility have a plastic plug inside the wiper switch that disables the intermittent position on the switch. You have to get that plug out before you can physically move the lever below "off."
