And taste is a matter of opinion. If the list has a rule about it, it
should be written down somewhere and the moderators should enforce it.
If, for example, the fact that people immediately post alternatives
is driving vendors away [do we have any examples of this?], it might
be in the best interest of the list to prevent that from happening.
I would be interested to hear from any vendors if they would consider
this a reason not to post or participate here. I am not a vendor, and
only vendors know the pain of being one and staying in business etc,
but I would say that this list has an excellent balance. People post
products from time to time but it never feels like you're being
spammed. One of the things that keeps it from feeling that way is
that there is pretty much no-holds-barred discussion, so if someone is
posting crap products or a lousy price it's going to be exposed
immediately, which should tend to improve the quality of the postings
with commercial offers.
These days I look pretty much exclusively to list vendors because I
want to support the people that support the community. Obviously (to
me, but people may vary in opinion on this) there is going to be a
harder decision if there is a huge price disparity. I feel like the
warm fuzzy feeling of supporting people who support the community is
worth five bucks, but probably not fifty...but maybe fifty if it's
fifty out of five hundred, while for smaller amounts I would stomach a
larger percentage, etc.
I appreciate the list vendors and I put my money where my appreciation
is. As long as enough of us do that, I think that everything will
work out fine.
