well, you could connect 12 volts to one, observing polarity ...
and see if it will pump a fluid ..
like diesel fuel or kerosene say.
like from a pan into a jar.
if it seems to happily delivery a liquid like that , it's probably ok.

for storage ... as empty of fuel as possible.
perhaps run fuel with Stab-ile in it through the pump , then empty the pump.
or run diesel through it, them empty it as best you can.

So through one part purchase or another I inherited two fuel pumps of
unknown condition, I carry them along in the event I think I may have an
issue.  Is there a way to test a pump off the van or otherwise judge its
potential as a replacement.  Secondly is there any special care or attention
to storing a fuel pump?
