Please forgive me for not knowing what's in the original post or following the thread all the way through ... but you want to run the return fuel on your vanagon ( diesel , air-cooled or waterboxer ) to somewhere other than the fuel tank ????

why ? Stock system is basically flawless. There are advantages to returning fuel to the fuel tank.

I don't see how it would matter of you are upstream or downstream of the pre-pump small filter.

And I don't see why anyone would run the return to just before the fuel pump. Trying to compensate for a slightly clogged fuel tank sump area ?????
