go for it. Nice improvement. since it was optional in 84 ....there are two things your van should already have .. the bosses on the right cylinder head where the power steering pump bracket mounts ..those should be already drilled and tapped, tho it's not hard to do if they are not.

also ...in the frame of the van, below the filler neck, on the inner edge of the frame ...there will be cut-outs for the PS pipes to pass through going alongside the gas tank. The whole job is bolt-in.

You just need to round up all the parts ...and the gas tank needs to come out to do the job.

I would not go back to non-power steering on my personal vanagon is one way to express it. It's nice to have- PS. and mostly they are a very long-living system. There is some care involved but not hard to do. ...thinking check the screen in the bottom of the PS reservoir and change the fluid once in a while.
