That would be Willy and Joe, soul-children of Bill Mauldin and beloved representatives of all the poor bloody dogfaces in the front lines in Europe. Mauldin was a true subversive and would undoubtedly have loved Vanagons and Vanagonauts. If you haven't met Willy and Joe, they can be found in _Up Front_ <http://www.amazon.com/Up-Front-Bill-Mauldin/dp/0393050319>. They're the sort of folk you'd like to know.

For the particular cartoon referenced, <http://www.dogfacesoldiers.org/info/memoirs/nickelson/sack1.htm> -- start at the bottom and work up.

With profound respect for the American dogface, his Jeep, and what he managed to accomplish without even a Kubelwagen, let alone a Syncro.

David
