Uhhhh, we're not talking about the distributor. We're talking about the distributor DRIVE. Yours is mis-clocked CCW one tooth. That's why you cannot rotate the distributor to achieve proper timing.

For pre-digifant Vanagons, I've found that the later Bentleys contain more error than the 1980-1985 edition. In any case, most errata is documented on Bentley's website. To the best of my knowledge, most errors are regarding wiring diagrams. If you think that there is an error in your edition, pop over to the Vanagon forum on Bentley's website. Stan Wolfarth was very diligent in documenting corrections.
