Ok all, I seem to have an issue I don't understand.

My uncle (a mechanic) just finished doing tons of work on the Vanagon -
axles, bearings, brakes, cv joints, carpet, bumpers, wheels/tires,
transmission service, tune up, oil change, rear heater core and as you can
see, just a bunch of stuff (yes, including fuel lines).

But . . . every time I "fill" the gas tank (third time was Sunday
afternoon), it only takes between 8-9 gallons. We changed the gas cap as the
one that was on it didn't seem to fit correctly but we can't get the
replacement we bought (locking version from Van Cafe) to fit properly
either. So, we got another one - not sure where he got it from - and even
though it didn't fit right, it fit better than the locking one. Problem is -
it fit poorly enough that if you didn't hold your face just right, it came
off. Well, it came off yesterday and I have no idea where it went! So, I
have to get another one yet again.

The questions then are - why am I only getting 8-9 gallons per fill-up
(about 180-ish miles per tank)? And what can I do about a gas cap? I'm
beginning to think I don't have an original gas tank but I don't know how to
tell.
