Yes, the oil will start showing black very quickly. As for how often, I run Mobil 1 15/50 and change every 6,000 to 8,000 miles, about once a year for me, my '90 2.1L WBX w/155,000 miles is not my daily driver, virtually all miles are on long trips. But I do change filters at least once, usually twice, during that period. And I'll use maybe a quart of oil on a 3,000 mile trip.
