Thanks for the suggestions. I had remembered seeing something like these tools ("internal" pipe wrenches) before but had never used one. Thought they may not be available in a small enough size.

I found the answer on-line at the Home Depot web site and picked up a set at the local HD store over lunch. Just $11.55 for a set.

They came in a set of 3 and the smallest size was just right. http://tinyurl.com/2ct4fhy

It gripped amazingly tight and I was able to remove the tube very smoothly. Oddly, the hex end of the tool is a 13mm size so I didn't even have to find an SAE wrench. Gripped so well inside I actually had a bit of trouble getting the "extractor" extracted from the tube! :-)
