Dear Kevin, Just to be clear, it's the GVWR (Gross Vehicle Weight Rating) and GAWR (Gross Axle Weight Rating) that count, not the curb weight. GVWR for the Vanagon is 5269# or very close; GAWR is 2646 front and 2866 rear.
