if its speed related, and it sounds like it is, it most probably is bad u-joints on drive shaft or mis-aligned driveshaft (vis-a-vis front diff and tranny orientation). drive shaft rpm is speed dependent, not engine rpm.

it can be worse things, but let's be optimistic :)

gas gauge, could be sender failure (pita) or wire/connection broken, or gage broken.
