Well since I've cleaned my grounds I haven't had any starting issues, now I've only taken it for one test drive 10 min worth and have started it over 20 times in the driveway. I would let it warm up then shut it off and try to start. All successful.... I do get a rough idle after 5-10 min of idle time at times, it's a little bouncy between 400-1100k rpm. Last night when I took it for a little test drive I had bucking in 1-2 gear, 3 gear seemed ok. Pulled back into the driveway and she was at a pretty steady idle around 900-1000k.

I did purchase a new Temp2 but haven't installed it yet. I have AC so it's a bit hard to get at. Here's what I've checked so far...

Cleaned all grounds

Check for vapor leaks- tested by spaying carb cleaner- no change in idle

Checked wires for corrosion or bad connections

checked for the click on the idle switch-(haven't adjusted anything though)

I've disconnected the temp2 and reconnected- did not see any corrosion in the plug, couldn't get a visual on the temp2 sensor itself.

So I'm looking for my next step, is it the temp2 or something else?

According to the Vanagon Fuel Systems book, if starting troubles are still experienced after bypassing the ICU , or when plugging the ICU back in, it's not the ICU in the first case, and is in the second. Robert 1982 Westfalia

So I just discover that my van does not have the DIS (Digital Idle Stabalizer)and has been bypassed by plugging the two plugs together. I've only recently starting working in the engine area, fuel line replacemet, clean grounds, etc.... I've had the engine die when coming to a stop and then not starting the past few weeks which is why I've been spending time in the engine. (enjoying the learning process) While reading posts and researching topics found out there is no DIS and van has been on bypass since I've owned her. Almost 2 years....

My question is once I put in a new DIS and then calibrate the idle per Bently is there anything else that I should be concerned with due to the bypass? I don't know how long it's been this way before I purchased the van? Anyone have any experience with this? Thanks...

Bob
