Obviously the price was right, so why not? Especially if body is rust free or close to that.

I've put lot's of time/money into my '81, but it runs great and is quite reliable. True my engine is not stock, but the air cooled is just fine when built, maintained and used properly.

Some parts are NLA for the older Vanagons, but that's starting to be true for the later models too. Besides. There are dedicated vendors who are coming up with replacement parts or sources of NOS parts.
