thanks for all the replies!!

Since the flywheel had to come off, I figured I'd do the seal at the same time and have the flywheel resurfaced. I got the flywheel back this afternoon.

Ken at Vanagain hooked me up with an VW OEM seal, since some people seem to think those have fewer problems than the shorter aftermarket ones.

Getting the Pilot bearing out was horrible. I got a cheap slide hammer from harbor freight but the hooks were too dull to get them to catch on what was left of the bearing. I ended up cutting it along the side with a diamond-tip dremel and then pulling it out.

Tomorrow I'm picking up a diesel pilot bearing (056 105 313C) from a local place that had it in stock, since I heard that these will fit, and include a seal that removes the need for the spacer and felt washer. (My spacer is missing).

Tomorrow stuff will start to go back together.

thanks again, guys!

Wes

One more thing: I found these little cylinders on the ground today ( http://people.cs.uchicago.edu/~wes/cylinders.jpg) What are they??? I haven't looked for them in the Bentley yet...
