Ill have to confess: I have never had a mortar. My mother bought one last year and I moved away from home some 15 years ago, so I have had to survive whole my adventurous life so far without one. I used two similar spoons. I still do it when I have to crush some halite for my Sauce béarnaise. Does not matter to me if I look like an old crackhead while (/because) doing it. And I am not referring to the cracks in the head of VW engine.

Perhaps my mother was on to something when she did not get that mortar. I do remember several occasions (not related to anything meant to be eaten) when teenager me was in need of a mortar and I remember wondering why on earth my mother never got herself one. Everything in my mother suggested that she most definitely would have one.

Oh.. One might really want to check what substance the mortar is made of before grinding any hard core stuff in it :)
