Ok so the speedo needle is on a post. The post has a small spring and is under tenshion, Hence the needle goes back to 0 under spring tenshion. So I pulled the needle off and moved it tell it was acurate. I compared it to my GPS and also did a mile check doing 60 mph from mile post to mile post on the freeway to make sure the miles matched up. One thing I did find out is the needle has nothing to do with the mechanics of the mile gears. The speedo cable goes into the back and turns the gears to make the miles change. the needle is something thet turns after the mile gears turn. It was very simple. I also had another speedo the was off and calibrated it as well. So I fixed 2 speedos today. And Im very happy to have changed the reading to reflect the miles of my new engine. That was kinda tricky.

Why don't you just tell everyone so it's in the archives?

> I saw someone post to one of the vanagon lists about there not being a fix for a speedo mph that is off. My speedo (out of a 1984 vanagon) was 10 miles an hour faster than I was going. so when I was driving 50mph my speedo would say 60mph, I checked it against my GPS. So I decided to pull my speedo out today and mess with it. First I changed the miles to 2,359 to reflect how many miles are on my new 2.4L Gowesty engine. It was so simple. When I sell my van if I ever do, I will make the miles reflect the chassie miles by adding them together. Now back to the speedo. So after I changed the miles I wanted to calibrate my MPH. I did and it was so simple. If any one has a speedo mph prob shoot me an e-mail and I will tell you how to correct it. It can be done and its easy.........
