Good morning! ........ Anyway, back to misbehaving Vanagon.. ..... ......... you will hear a loud whine for several seconds. While the whine is present, the trans keeps working. After about 10-20 seconds, whine disappears and so does the functionality of the auto trans. You can repeat this with the same results each time. Where do you think that noise is coming from?...... BenT- TQ,

noise? First guess... within the Valve Body. A piece of dirt/wear causes one of the balls or valves to stick partially open/closed.

The part that puzzles me is the repeatability of the "whine" symptom.... Transmission builds up enough pressure to work and whine for 10-20 seconds then stops working. By 'functionality' do you mean all functions..... 1st, 2nd, 3rd and reverse each/all work for 10-20 seconds if selected? Individually select each position on start-up and see if it works....

Are you able to perform a pressure test on the Transmission? see Bentley 37.17 This may provide information to locate the defective part(s)....

Drop the Transmission Pan and see what's in the filter & pan? If no clutch-lining or metal fragments.... If the filter is clean..... a good thing.... but the Transmission has to come out/apart and be inspected...

PZ...... sent from my TQ-iBook --------------------
