On the campers, the ground for the fridge relay is through the starter solenoid. Sometimes there is enough back feed to keep the light off while cranking. This is a bit of overkill but basically it keeps the fridge off during engine cranking and if the alternator should fail. As the fridge relay also loads down the alternator warning/starting circuit that back feed helps get the alternator going just as the key is released.

I just experienced a minor mystery with my Alt light. I turned the ignition on without paying attention but got distracted before starting the engine. When I looked to start, that Alt light was not lit. I went ahead and cranked, and the light lit briefly then went out as the engine started. Subsequent operation (five or six starts) has been normal.

I shall reveal the trick as and when I discover it...
